Toshiba have outed two new smartphones at Mobile World Congress 2010, and as expected they follow on from their TG01 Snapdragon-based Windows Mobile handset. The Toshiba TG02 is the most obvious successor, a 9.99mm-thick handset with an expansive 4.1-inch capacitive WVGA touchscreen and a 1GHz processor; the Toshiba K01, meanwhile, has the same 1GHz processor with a 4.1-inch OLED capacitive touchscreen and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

The K01 is 12.9mm thick, and both devices have microSDHC slots and can be updated by up to 32GB cards. OS is Windows Mobile 6.5, and on top is a new, custom 3D UI which Toshiba reckon will make navigation more straightforward. We weren’t too convinced with the company’s first attempt, it has to be said, so we’ll be heading over to Toshiba’s stand here at MWC 2010 to take a look.

Toshiba are keeping details of availability close to their chest, so we’ll also be pestering them to find out exactly when we can see these two devices on shelves.

Press Release:

TOSHIBA DEBUTS NEW HANDSETS AND LEADING MOBILE TECHNOLOGIES AT MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS 2010

· Toshiba previews wide-screen TG02 entertainment phone and K01 with sliding QWERTY keyboard

· Fast 1GHz processors and wide, high-quality capacitive touchscreens on both handsets

· Toshiba’s latest laptops and its vision of multiple interacting devices demonstrated first-hand on the Toshiba stand

· New mobile technologies, including Resolution+, LCD control and VoiceTranslation showcased at Toshiba’s Innovation Hub, Hall 8, Stand 8A111

BARCELONA, 15th February, 2010 – Toshiba Information Systems (UK) Ltd, Mobile Communications Division, today debuts two new mobile handsets for the first time at Mobile World Congress 2010. Expanding Toshiba’s mobile handset range, the TG02 and K01 will offer capacitive touchscreens and fast internal processors, joining Toshiba’s highly successful TG01 Windows® phone, which launched in 2009. Toshiba’s drive to lead innovation in the mobile arena will also be showcased with the display of new mobile technologies, combined with a first-hand demonstration of its multi-screen solutions.

Two new handsets added to Toshiba’s mobile range
The TG02 builds on the super-slim form of the Toshiba TG01 Windows® phone, and is the ideal device for users who demand high-quality entertainment on the go. Sleek in design, the TG02 features a wide 10.4cm (4.1”)[i] VGA capacitive touchscreen, offering a fast, responsive user experience, while the same internal image tuning technology as used on the TG01 delivers rich, high-quality visuals in a slim (9.9mm1) and portable device – making it ideal for viewing movies and images while on the move.

A newly designed and highly-intuitive 3D menu system on the TG02 makes it easy for users to browse though the handset and access a range of entertainment features. Based on the very latest Windows Mobile® 6.5 platform, the TG02 enhances the user experience with its quick and easy operation. An internal 1GHz[ii] processor also makes the TG02 an ideal device for internet browsing, enabling users to quickly access and load websites or stream content.

Joining the TG02 at MWC is the impressive new K01 – a stylish, powerful and easy to use media device optimised for mobile messaging. Featuring a slide-out QWERTY keyboard that makes typing easy and comfortable, the K01 also offers Toshiba’s first-ever Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) capactive 10.4cm (4.1”)1 wide-screen – providing bright colour, contrast, lower power consumption and faster response times than ever before. The K01 also features super-slim design, measuring 12.9mm1 front to back, making each handset portable and stylish in equal measure.

The new user interface lets users quickly browse to their favourite features, saving time and making the mobile experience more enjoyable. The K01 also features a fast 1GHz2 processer and storage can be expanded up to 32GB[iii] using microSDHC cards, allowing users to store their favourite movies, music and games with plenty of room to spare.

New Toshiba technologies at the Innovation Hub
As well as showcasing the new additions to its mobile line-up, Toshiba will be displaying a range of new mobile technologies in a special area within the Toshiba stand called the Innovation Hub.

The Innovation Hub will display a range of software solutions developed by Toshiba to improve the mobile user experience. Visitors will be able to see a range of new technologies for the very first time, including the mobile implementation of Resolution+ image tuning technology fostered from Toshiba’s REGZA TVs. Re-developed for Toshiba mobile handsets, Resolution+ improves video playback by analysing image definition and intelligently upscaling video quality to offer a sharper, clearer and richer viewing experience.

Another key development which will be showcased at the Innovation Hub is LCD Control – a technology that ensures users can get the same high-quality images with no loss of contrast in difficult lighting conditions. For example, when using a mobile in bright sunlight, the reflection and effect on image contrast often makes using a handset for viewing videos and images difficult. LCD Control boosts contrast detail to levels that are unaffected by the bright lighting, providing a hassle-free way to check messages, write emails or even watch videos under daylight conditions.

Toshiba will also be demonstrating Voice Translation – a helpful programme that uses Toshiba’s Speech Recognition, Machine Translation and Speech Synthesis technology to translate different languages[iv], synthesize back into a voice and repeat back in real time, without the need for an internet connection. Originally developed for Toshiba notebooks, Voice Translation is an ideal tool for international business use or holidays, allowing users to communicate easily using their mobile phone, wherever they are in the world.

More Toshiba laptops and netbooks with embedded Mobile Broadband
Toshiba’s new line-up of Mobile Broadband-enabled laptops will also be showcased, including new versions of its recently announced 25.7 cm (10.1”) Toshiba mini NB300 and mini NB305 netbooks, featuring embedded Mobile Broadband modules. The availability of a mobile data connection with data rates up to 7.2 Megabit per second[v], together with an outstanding battery life of up to 11 hours and a light weight of only 1.33 kg, make these netbooks ideal as highly portable companions. In addition, Toshiba is also debuting Mobile Broadband-ready versions of the recently unveiled professional laptops targeted at small offices and companies, medium businesses and large enterprises: the Tecra M11, A11 and S11, and the ultra-slim Satellite Pro T110 and Satellite Pro T130. For consumers, Toshiba offers the Satellite T110 and Satellite T130 with embedded Mobile Broadband.

Toshiba’s multi-screen solution makes sharing media easier than ever
As well as debuting a new mobile line-up and showcasing it’s latest mobile broadband laptops and netbooks, Toshiba will also be demonstrating first-hand its vision for a world of multiple interacting devices that will allow users to share photos, music and movies across different screens at the touch of a button.

The Toshiba Media Controller (TMC) software allows users to stream content across connected multimedia devices with ease, regardless of screen size. Users can share media from their handset to a PC, notebook, or television, and vice versa across a network (whether a home network, enterprise network or WLAN), using the easy to set-up device. Toshiba is committed to offering users a connected world, where devices are used together to form a simple, effective media offering regardless of screen size.

I have been anxiously waiting for 3D home theater gear to hit the market in force. I’m not planning to upgrade any time soon, I figure in six months or so the equipment will be much better and cheaper as well. If you have your credit card in hand and want a 3D home theater right now Panasonic has announced that its 3D home theater is now available in select Best Buy Magnolia stores exclusively.

If your local Best Buy happens to be a Magnolia store carrying the Panasonic gear you can buy the full HD 3D Panasonic system today for $2,899.99. Two components make up the system with the most expensive piece being the 50-inch Panasonic VIERA VT20 3D plasma TV for $2,499.95.

The other component is the Panasonic BDT300 3D Blu-ray disc player costing $399.95. The TV includes one pair of 3D glasses and if you need extra active shutter glasses from Panasonic they will cost you $149.95 per set. The rub is that right now there is no 3D content for you to watch and probably won’t be until later this summer

Last month I mentioned that Sony was set to start showing demos of its 3D TVs like the BRAVIA XBR-52LX900 at Sony Style stores and was going to be taking pre-orders on the sets. What we didn’t know at the time was exactly when the sets would ship.

Reuters reports that Sony will start whipping its 3D TVs in June. The electronics giant is hoping that it can make 3D TVs count for 10% of the 25 million sets it hopes to sell in its next financial year. Sony and many other TV makers are hoping that 3D TVs will help them to increase sales during the down economy that has seen TV sales decline.

We already know that Sony plans to offer a new firmware for the PS3 that will enable 3D gaming and movies and it would be safe to assume that the update will land for the PS3 in June alongside the availability of its TVs. Rival Samsung plans to launch its 3D TVs in the US this month.

Intel’s Atom chips are well known for being the low-cost alternative to “better” processors on the market, and up until now, it’s been a general rule of thumb that their presence in the mobile industry has been stymied to a single-core layout. Their dual-core processors are well known in the desktop realm, where tradition speaks that more power is needed (even if dual-core Atom chips don’t offer that much power). But it looks like the times are changing, because a rumor has begun to sprout that something in the dual-core vein of things is on the way to a netbook near you.

According to a report from PC Inpact, Intel is currently in the works to create a dual-core Atom chip the smaller laptops of the world. Why is this a big deal? Simply because up until now, if a manufacturer wanted to put a dual-core layout in their netbook, they had to use architecture from a desktop chip. Which means resources may run great, but the bottom of your netbook may get a bit hot, and your battery may drain a lot faster. Chips created for netbooks specifically don’t generally have this power, as they are essentially optimized for the form factor.

The report goes on to say that the chip itself could be called the N500. Intel’s latest chip is the D510, so the number designation makes perfect sense. As does the letter, considering the majority of Intel’s netbook-oriented chips have begun with N. We haven’t heard word about a price or availability date, but considering that this considered still an unconfirmed rumor, there’s no surprise there. PC Inpact claims that the report came from companies working directly with Intel, so maybe there is some truth to this tale. Only time will tell.

Notebooks are dime a dozen, and much like the mobile phone marekt, it’s the features that really matter. In the case of Pioneer’s latest laptop, the 12.1? DreamBook Lite, it’s got a few features in here that may make someone shopping around take a second look. That is, if you’re looking for your next great gaming notebook.

If we told you that you’ve got a few options at your disposal here, that’d be a bold-faced understatement. For processors, you’ve got the Intel N450 1.66GHz variation, or the N470 1.83GHz if that suits you a bit more. From the title you can discern on your own that the notebook is rocking a 12.1-inch display, but what you may not know, is that it’s not just your normal LCD. Nope, this one’s packing an LED monitor, so basically it’s just a feast for your eyes while you’re playing your favorite games. It’s got the normal slew of inputs, including three USB ports, the LAN port, and an option for an HDMI port. It comes standard with a 4-cell battery, but you will more than likely push out the 10 hour battery life from the optional 6-cell battery.

It’s also got WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, a standard 1.3MP camera, and 3G is also optional. The Operating System is apparently up to you: it supports Windows XP/Vista/7, as well as Ubuntu 9.10 and Linux. So, while some things are just more run-of-the-mill options, we’re pleasantly surprised to see an LED display on this gaming notebook, and if that 10 hour battery life actually holds true, that’s beyond fantastic news. Look below for the full specifications list.

Perhaps one of the companies most prolifically embracing cloud-computing based technology, Google has just launched its Apps Marketplace, that will integrate with the Google Apps ecosystem and deliver products and services directly from the “cloud”.

During tonight’s Google Campfire One developer event, the Apps Marketplace went live with 50 applications available from third-party vendors, and Google has stated that it will charge 3rd-party developers $100 for selling their applications in the marketplace. The marketplace also supports OpenID to provide a single sign-on for developers, and customers are allowed access through OAuth, the open standard for authorizing users.

Google also noted that it is celebrating a recently accomplished milestone: 25 million users and 2 million businesses are now using some form of Google Apps. With this foray into more “enterprise”-based applications, both businesses as well as consumers will be able to benefit from this app market centralization, not to mention Google itself.

MSI pulled the cover off its Wind12 line of AMD powered ultraportables a few months ago. We saw the original U230 on video back in November of 2009. MSI has unveiled a couple new models for the Wind12 line called the U230-033 and the U230-040.

The new models for the line weigh 3.3 pounds each and have 2GB of RAM along with a 6-cell battery. The operating system for both models is Windows 7 Home Premium and both have 12.1-inch 1366 x 768 HD resolution screens. Graphics on both models are via Radeon HD 3200 GPUs.

The keyboards use keys 51% larger than those on standard keyboards do for typing comfort and pack in a 1.3MP webcam, HDMI out, USB 2.0 ports, and a memory card reader. The difference in the two models comes in storage and CPU. The U230-033 has an Athlon Neo MV-40 processor and 250GB of storage with the U230-040 getting an Athlon X2 L335 processor and 320GB of storage. The 033 sells for $429 and the 040 sells for $479 with both at Newegg now.

That’s right, we bet you didn’t see that coming, right? LG is expanding their current 3D TV portfolio, and hoping that the competition doesn’t bog down the selection too much. There are plenty to choose from, but we do have to say that this model from LG looks sleek as all get out, and we wish we could muster the courage (for our wallets) to pick one of these bad boys up.

LG has been pushing out some models of their 3D TV line-up over the last few months to some locations in the UK, mostly pubs, but all of that is about to change. The company is pushing for home use now, so that its customers can enjoy 3D TV in May on the comfort of their couch. The TV (LX9900), coupled with LG’s Blu-Ray Disc player (BX580) would make your home movie night just about the best one on the block. Unless, you know, someone down the street has the better surround sound.

The TV will come into variants: 47-inch and 55-inch, and utilize active shutter glasses for the 3D technology. There’s also TruMotion 400Khz, 10,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, Bluetooth, DLNA, wireless AV link. And luckily enough for you, LG wants to make sure that you see their Blu-Ray player right next to the new TV, so they’re releasing the player at the same time as the TV. Price wise, while still officially unconfirmed, have been murmured to be about £2500 – £3000 for the 47-inch variation, and £3600 – £4000 for the 55-incher. The Blu-Ray player is said to go for about £350. So, start saving now, or you might miss out on one of the sleekest 3D TVs out there.
